How to Prepare for Your First Legal Consultation

KI|E|RO SWISS · 2026

Walking into a lawyer\'s office can be intimidating, especially if you fear that your status puts you at risk. However, your first consultation is the most critical step in your journey to legalization. Here is how to prepare effectively.

Gather Every Shred of Paper

In the legal world, if it isn\'t on paper, it didn\'t happen. Even if you think a document is "bad" for your case, your lawyer needs to see it.

• Identity Documents: Passports (even expired), birth certificates, and ID cards.

• Proof of Presence: Rent receipts, utility bills, or even dated photos in front of landmarks that prove how long you have lived in Europe.

• Communication with Authorities: Any letters from the police or immigration office.

Be Brutally Honest

Your lawyer is bound by professional secrecy. They cannot report you to the police. If you lied on a previous application or used a different name, tell them now. A lawyer can fix a mistake, but they cannot fix a surprise in court.

Write Down Your Timeline

Memory is unreliable under stress. Before the meeting, write down a chronological timeline of your life: when you entered Europe, where you stayed, and any significant events (illnesses, jobs, births).

The Question List

Don\'t leave the office without asking:

• What is my specific legal "path" (Asylum, Regularization, Family Ties)?

• What are the total costs and timelines?

• What are the biggest risks to my case right now?
